OK, so I realize that you (definitely) will hear all of this music on the radio so I’m veering from my tagline in the header. [Editor's Note: I need to change it.] However, I really wanted to put together a playlist of a song from each year that my parents have been married. Without further ado, here’s the link…

Each song selected was in the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 for June 6th:

  • 1970 Creedence Clearwater Revival – Up Around the Bend
  • 1971 Three Dog Night – Joy to the World
  • 1972 Cat Stevens – Morning Has Broken
  • 1973 Edgar Winter – Frankenstein
  • 1974 Gordon Lightfoot – Sundown
  • 1975 Chicago – Old Days
  • 1976 The Rolling Stones – Fool to Cry
  • 1977 Foreigner – Feels Like the First Time
  • 1978 ABBA – Take a Chance on Me
  • 1979 Supertramp – The Logical Song
  • 1980 Blondie – Call Me
  • 1981 Neil Diamond – America
  • 1982 The Human League – Don’t You Want Me
  • 1983 David Bowie – Let’s Dance
  • 1984 Phil Collins – Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)
  • 1985 Simple Minds – Don’t You (Forget About Me)
  • 1986 Nu Shooz – I Can’t Wait
  • 1987 Genesis – In Too Deep
  • 1988 Rick Astley – Together Forever
  • 1989 Guns N’ Roses – Patience
  • 1990 Bell Biv Devoe – Poison
  • 1991 R.E.M. – Losing My Religion
  • 1992 Red Hot Chili Peppers – Under the Bridge
  • 1993 Rod Stewart – Have I Told You Lately
  • 1994 Ace Of Base – The Sign
  • 1995 Nicki French – Total Eclipse of the Heart
  • 1996 Alanis Morissette – Ironic
  • 1997 The Verve Pipe – The Freshmen
  • 1998 Backstreet Boys – Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)
  • 1999 Sugar Ray – Every Morning
  • 2000 Sisqo – Thong Song
  • 2001 Dido – Thank You
  • 2002 Jimmy Eat World – The Middle
  • 2003 3 Doors Down – When I’m Gone
  • 2004 Maroon 5 – This Love
  • 2005 Kelly Clarkson – Since U Been Gone
  • 2006 Daniel Powter – Bad Day
  • 2007 Daughtry – Home
  • 2008 Natasha Bedingfield – Pocketful Of Sunshine
  • 2009 Katy Perry – Waking Up In Vegas
  • 2010 Ke$ha – Your Love Is My Drug

Also, some notes:

  • Don’t take this list as meaning that I like all of these songs (in fact, most of them I don’t). Instead, it’s merely a collection of the best ones that I could pick from the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 tracks for the past forty years.
  • I only wanted full-length tracks in the playlist, so sometimes I needed to choose another song (certain years only had 30-second samples on Napster).
  • These are not songs that I will normally write posts about. Uncharted Radio is essentially meant to be a pop-free music blog, so I’ve greatly made an exception here.

And mom and dad, if you’re reading this,
Happy 40th (Ruby) Anniversary!

Wow. Looking at the list is quite amazing. I kinda understand when some people say to me “there’s no good music today”. It still drives me crazy but I get it now. Like the 80s the good stuff is hidden. You have to look for it (or let Next do the homework and just listen for 1 hour sorry had to plug myself). There is a lot of glorious music being made it’s just not on the radio.

I couldn’t agree more. As I was going through the years picking the songs I noticed that from 1990 on the quality of the top 10 songs deteriorated with each passing year.

I’m just hoping that this next decade brings us better pop music, but it doesn’t look like that will be the case when looking at the past 20 years. [sigh]
