Top 10 Albums of 2009 from IndieMuse [Thoughts]
Source: IndieMuse, Music Blogs
I really like what David says before his list:
The truth is, we wanted to make sure that we listened to every single album released in 2009 before publishing an official list. What if Wilco or another band released an amazing, secret album on December 31st? We couldn’t leave it up to chance.
Very true, and it’s good that he thought of that.
You might want to see and hear his list without my opinions first, so you can do that by going here.
10. Fanfarlo – Reservoir [2009] Atlantic
- David at IndieMuse says that Fanfarlo reminds him of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! but I think it’s more like a David Byrne side project. Especially the lead vocalist — you can’t deny that.
9. Le Loup – Family [2009] Hardly Art
- It’s hard to tell what their music is like from one song, but I agree with David in that they have a really cool worldly sound.
8. Grand Hallway – Promenade [2009] Self-Release
- To me this band is like Polyphonic Spree without cheesy lyrics and music. I know it’s harsh, but it’s true.
7. Passion Pit – Manners [2009] Frenchkiss
- I’m not a huge fan of the vocals as I find them to be kind of irritating, but the music speaks for itself. It’s an interesting mix of dance, electronica, and indie rock styles.
6. Fruit Bats – The Ruminant Band [2009] Sub Pop
- There’s a definite Classic Rock influence to this band’s music (Kansas and Steve Miller Band come to mind). Still, there’s an indie sound that makes the sound their own.
5. Bombadil – Tarpits and Canyonlands [2009] Ramseur
- David is right in saying that this band needs to be on more lists. After listening to the first track he has available on his post, “Honeymoon”, I agree. If you like Airborne Toxic Event, Architecture in Helsinki, Arcade Fire, and the like, you’ll probably dig their style.
4. Various Artists – Dark Was The Night [2009] 4ad
- I couldn’t agree with David more in that the music is all great. Actually, I think that it is one of the best compilation albums out there. I came across it as I was browsing music on Napster and was instantly hooked.
3. Animal Collective – Merriweather Post Pavillion [2009] Domino
- It looks like I’m alone in thinking this, but I don’t like this album that much. And I’ve heard it a few times. I guess David was at a loss for words since he described it with an ellipsis (…). ;^P
2. The Avett Brothers – I And Love And You [2009] Atlantic
- Finally someone agrees with me! I remember seeing some people saying that 2009 was a horrible year for music. Pop, that could be, but indie, no, as this album proves. I saw them perform “Slight Figure of Speech” on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien and that to me is one of the best tracks by The Avett Brothers.
1. Andrew Bird – Noble Beast [2009] Fat Possum
- I’m not as fond of this album as David is but I’ve only heard it once. Maybe it would grow on me, who knows.
